114 years of history.
King Alfonso XIII, the 140 km/h of a 1916 Abadal-Buick, the last Continental and a rebirth. The story few know, told for the first time.
Francisco «Paco» Abadal.
In the early 20th century, Francisco «Paco» Abadal became one of the pioneers of Spain's nascent automobile industry. A racing enthusiast, he first made his name as a successful cyclist before turning his full attention to motorcars and racing. He began selling cars in 1902 and quickly earned a strong reputation as a dealer of prestige vehicles.
In this way he drew in Spanish high society — including King Alfonso XIII himself, who became one of his clients. The end of his alliance with Hispano-Suiza in 1913 marked the turning point that drove him to build automobiles under his own name.
Abadal y Cía. Barcelona.
Between 1913 and 1916, Francisco «Paco» Abadal founded Abadal y Cía, with 18, 25 and 45 HP models and a light sporting variant for the keenest speed enthusiasts. By setting up local production in Barcelona, he supplied the booming high-society market with refined automobiles able to rival the established foreign luxury marques.
In 1913 he secured a licence-manufacturing agreement with the Belgian firm Impéria; the outbreak of the First World War soon halted production.
Abadal-Buick. 140 km/h.
From the outset, ABADAL targeted a clientele that valued exclusivity, design and performance. Its cars — luxury and sporting models — were a benchmark of Spanish motoring in their day.
The Abadal-Buicks reached 140 km/h; one chronicler described them as «American power with European luxury».
The Abadal Continental.
Abadal tried to revive the marque with the Continental, a model on a Hupmobile chassis. Low demand in the depths of the crisis forced the workshop to close that same year.
Though production was limited, ABADAL left a lasting mark through its pioneering spirit and its relentless pursuit of innovation. But legends do not die — they sleep.
